Good for Baker Mayfield.
The quarterback of the Browns — at least for now, but certainly not for much longer — pulled no punches in saying in a recent podcast that club executives, obviously General Manager Andrew Berry said one thing and did another concerning his return as the starter in 2022. The Browns indicated he was the guy but said they would continue to scour the landscape. They didn’t think they would get Deshaun Watson– or even just have a shot at him — but when they did acquire him in a trade with the Houston Texans the Browns dropped Mayfield like a bad habit without giving him a heads-up about the move.
Mayfield didn’t like it and said so, for which he is taking a lot of heat in Northeast Ohio. Much of it is coming from the way too many media types who have apparently gotten fully on board with the Browns’ move, in doing so turning a blind eye to all the baggage Warson carries with the 22 civil lawsuits that have been filed against him claiming sexual misconduct.
Mayfield had enough guts to speak his mind. Not only was the trade the wrong move from a moral standpoint, but with several other things, including the was the Browns sloppily handled it with the man who had been their starter since early in the 2018 season and was presumed to be filling that role again this year.
Mayfield owes the Browns nothing, just as the Browns have made it clear that they owe him nothing.
That includes him cow-towing, especially in this day and age when players feel they have the right to say what they mean when they mean what they say,’
And Baker Mayfield definitely meant what he said — and every single word of it.
If the Browns — and others — don’t like it, too bad. Get over it.
It just business, remember?
