The release of kicker Austin Seibert by the Browns is hardly a surprise.

He has been a big disappointment, missing field goals and even extra points, including in Sunday’s 38-6 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, since he arrived to the club as a fifth-round choice in the 2019 NFL Draft out of Oklahoma.

The games in this league are too close, being decided by a few points and often coming down to a kick at the end to figure out who wins, or loses, to have a kicker who can’t make kicks consistently. He is a huge liability. Those misfires take the starch out of a team, such as they did in Baltimore when he botched the extra-point attempt following the team’s touchdown, and then again when he shanked the field-goal try at the end of the first half.

Whether Cody Parkey, who takes over in his second go-around with the Browns, does any better than Seibert – or, if the truth be told, and it’s always told on this site, does any better than he did in his first stint with the club, is anyone’s guess. We’ll just have to wait and see, and if he messes up too much, then he will also be jettisoned – again.

But the bigger issue – the bigger point to be made — with the release of Seibert is that players, whether they’re named Austin Seibert or Austin Powers who were acquired by the previous regime, and not the present one, no longer have any protection after the regime change. They were on the former regime members’ resumes. They mean nothing to those running the current regime, so when they fail to produce, the rope is short. The current regime’s players have a much longer leash. They have some room for error.

Keep that in mind – oh, yes, definitely keep it in mind – as we go forward in this Browns season.
