Are the defensive problems from the players or the coordinator?

A friend and I had not an argument — we’ve never argued because we’re too close — but rather a good phone conversation the other day about the Browns defense, or, as I told him, the lack thereof.

You would recognize his name. He knows the Browns inside and out, so I greatly respect his opinion, even when we disagree, as we do now.

I told him that Browns defensive coordinator Joe Woods is as good as gone. I don’t think they would fire him during the season, because that’s not how these guys do business, which I like because they have tact, but he will be gone — and should be gone — as soon as the final gun sounds in the final game.

This defense has some players, but the unit performs horribly on most Sundays. It is the coordinator’s job to draw out that talent, put guys into position to make plays and to make adjustments when needed. I see absolutely none of that. They look disorganized, dysfunctional and disengaged.

My friend says simply, as Woody Hayes so famously uttered, “You win with people,” and he contends that the Browns defense doesn’t have many good players.

In any event, something has to change, and I think the most logical change involves canning Woods.

What say you?
