Another Big Winner

Bill Russell, who passed away Sunday morning at the ripe, old age of 88, was a great basketball player.

On any Mount Rushmore of basketball players, he definitely has a place on it (there are only four).

He was just as prolific – more importantly so, obviously — as an agent of societal change. If there was a Mount Rushmore of sports figures who altered the world, he would have a place on that, too (along with a guy named Jim Brown; perhaps you’ve heard of him).

And he was a tremendous winner — the greatest winner in sports history. He has 11 NBA championship rings – 11, as in one more than 10 and one less than 12!

Another late Hall of Famer – in football — who was an off-the-charts winner in sports history was Browns quarterback Otto Graham.

It is the quarterback’s job – his No. 1 job and in fact his only job – is to win the game. It’s not throwing for 300 yards and three touchdowns, because that isn’t always enough to win games.

Like Herman Edwards so famously said, “You play to win the game.”

Graham, who started on the first 10 great Browns teams from 1946-55, played in the league championship game every year – the first four in the All-America Football Conference and the remaining six in the NFL – and won seven titles.

Think about that: he was 10 for 10 in one regard and seven for 10 in another. Yes, think about that, indeed.

Don’t ever forget about Otto Graham – “Automatic Otto” they called him because he always got the job done – when you talk about the greatest winners in sports.
