And The Super Bowl Champion Is…

AND THE SUPER BOWL CHAMPION IS …

Football is a rough, tough game.

And the NFL is where it’s the roughest and toughest because of the length of the season — there are 17 regular-season games — and that, with the fact that the players are bigger, stronger and faster than at any other level, the collisions are more violent.

Cap increase; insider notebook; historic weekend but not this one; how the browns were built and built and built; Browns all-time best team; Mount Rushmore of Browns quarterbacks

As such, injuries pile up. Even the players who aren’t on the injury list, are injured — and hurting — in some way, shape or form at this point of the season, with just five games left. Browns quarterback Baker Mayfield, for instance, is really banged up, nursing an assortment of injuries, but after being able to rest during the team’s bye last weekend, he feels much better — not great or even good, mind you, just much better — and will continue to do what he has done all season, tough it out and play in the game, which this time will be against the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. It’s a virtual must-win situation for the 6-6 Browns, who are clinging to playoff hopes by a frayed thread.

The Browns announced at noon on Thursday that their punter, Jamie Gillan, the only punter on their roster, and linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. were being placed onto the reserve. COVID-19 list and likely will not play against Baltimore.

That’s obviously a blow to the Browns, as it would be to any team, since a blocked punt or even just a poor one could turn the game around in the Ravens’ favor.

All of this brings up an interesting point — and a sad and frightening one as well — and that is: What happens if a team makes it to the Super Bowl and its quarterback goes on the COVID-19 list and can’t play? That would be devastating and unprecedented because quarterback is the most important position in team sports.
And it could certainly occur.

If it did, then it would mean that the Super Bowl champion is really none other than that dreaded, pesky, refusing-to-go-away coronavirus.

Ouch.
