An ‘Ernest’ attempt to keep RB Room strong

It’s hard to tell what decisions the Browns will make throughout the rest of the offseason, especially in free agency and the NFL Draft, but they’re off to a good start with their intent to keep running back D’Ernest Johnson.

They did so by tendering the restricted free agent a $2.433 million contract offer for the 2022 season. If he receives a contract offer from another team, then the Browns have the right of first refusal to match it and retain him.

That’s tremendous news, for if they can keep Johnson, then they will be the only team in the NFL to have a legitimate three-headed running attack. They already had the best set of two backs in the league with Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, and with Johnson, that room — that situation — will be just that much better.

In fact, it’s the best that room has looked since the days of Kevin Mack, Earnest Byner and Herman Fontenot in the last half of the 1980s, and just before that with Mike Pruitt, Greg Pruitt and Calvin Hill in the late 1970s and early ’80s.

Johnson proved last season what he can do, coming out of nowhere to do an outstanding job when, due to injuries and COVID-19 situations sidelining Chubb and Hunt, he filled in on three different occasions. His style of running — aggressive and hard-nosed — fits the AFC North perfectly

We’ll see how things work out as the months progress leading to training camp in about 4 1/2 months. But as the Browns try to rebuild their wide receivers’ room in the offseason, already having a top-shelf rushing attack will be a great comfort for head coach Kevin Stefanski, quarterback Baker Mayfield and the rest of the offense.

And, in the here and now, it’s an indication that the Browns have a plan — and what appears to be a good one, at least to start out with — to get their struggling offense operating smoothly once again.
