An accurate look at careers of four iconic Browns

When their statistics from the All-America Football Conference are included, the playing field is not just leveled for four iconic former Browns.

Rather, it is greatly tilted in favor of quarterback Otto Graham, fullback Marion Motley and wide receivers Dante Lavelli and Mac Speedie, all members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

They played with the Browns during the club’s tremendous first four seasons of 1946-49 in the AAFC. But on their official career lists, the Browns don’t include statistics from the AAFC, just the NFL, into which they transitioned in 1950 after the AAFC was disbanded. The four Browns in question spent varying periods of time in the NFL with the club.

The inclusion of the AAFC stats gives an accurate picture of their careers. Here, then, is their standing on the various Browns career lists:

OTTO GRAHAM
(1946-55 OVERALL, 1950-55 IN THE NFL)

*No. 2 in yards passing — 23,584.

*No. 1 in touchdown passes — 174.

*No. 3 in completions — 1,464.



MARION MOTLEY

(1946-53 OVERALL, 1950-53 IN THE NFL)

*No. 7 in yards rushing — 4,712.

*No. 7 in rushing touchdowns — 31.

*No. 1 in average yards per carry — 5.7.



DANTE LAVELLI

(1946-56 OVERALL, 1950-56 IN THE NFL)

*No. 2 in receptions — 386.

*No. 2 in yards receiving — 6,488.

*No. 3 in average yards per reception — 16.8.

*No. 2 in touchdown receptions — 62.


MAC SPEEDIE

(1946-52 OVERALL, 1950-52 IN THE NFL)

*No. 3 in receptions — 349.

*No. 3 in yards receiving — 5,602.

*No. 9 in average yards per reception — 16.1.

*No. 6 in touchdown receptions — 33.
