DOES AL SAUNDERS STILL HAVE ENOUGH PEP TO REPLACE PEP?

100 Golf Tees!!

The Browns are looking for a top man on offense after Pep Hamilton left his job as associate head coach/offense to become assistant head coach/passing game coordinator at the University of Michigan.

After watching quarterback Wilton Speight make two perfectly-thrown passes to guys in scarlet jerseys in the 30-27 double-overtime loss at Ohio State, the Wolverines could sure use some coordination in their seemingly uncoordinated passing game.

But I digress.

Forget about The School Up North, or “our rivals,” as Urban Meyer likes to call Michigan. It’s the Browns with whom we need to concern ourselves. They need to concentrate on finding someone to replace Hamilton.

With that, then, how about promoting senior offensive assistant Al Saunders?

He is certainly qualified – and then some. He has been coaching – all on the offensive side of the ball – since 1972, and has been at the NFL level since 1983. He was head coach of the San Diego Chargers from 1986-88, and in 1987 his Chargers defeated the Browns during the heyday of the Bernie Kosar era.

The only obstacle may be his age. That wealth of experience comes with the fact he will turn 70 years old in three weeks. Saunders is known for his energy level on the job, but could he handle – would he want to handle – the increased responsibility of being head coach Hue Jackson’s right-hand man on offense?

Greg Roman, who was once considered to be one of the hottest NFL offensive minds, is reportedly a candidate. But he was fired this season as offensive coordinator of the Buffalo Bills. The Bills did some good things on offense, but why was he let go?. Was it just former Buffalo head coach Rex Ryan being Rex Ryan, or was there something more to it? Jackson will have to get to the bottom of that.

Whatever the Browns decide to do, they have to get this right. They seem to have made a good hire at defensive coordinator with Gregg Williams. Now they need to score big with this key offensive coaching opening.
