The Cincinnati Bengals’ Joe Burrow, courtesy of a tremendous performance from the Browns defense, wasn’t the only top-flight quarterback who struggled in Week 1 of the NFL regular season last weekend.
In fact, a lot of them did, whch was very abnormal.
Indeed, it’s hard to recall a time when so many of the big guys had problems in the same week.
We talk about quarterbacks all the time, and there’s a good reason for that. That is the most important position in team sports, and if you have a good one, then your team has a chance, and if it doesn’t, then it doesn’t.
Burrow’s team was beaten 24-3 by the Browns, of course. He had one of the worst days of his young career.
Patrick Mahomes, the best quarterback in the game, bar none, struggled, and his Kansas City Chiefs lost.
Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles was OK, more or less, but he was not the best quarterback in the game, and his team lost.
Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills was awful, and his team lost.
Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles was far less than sensational, but his team hung on to win in spite of him.
Daniel Jones of the New York Giants was absolutely horrific, and his team was even worse, losing by 40 points and being shut out.
Kirk Cousins of the Minnesota Vikings was just OK, and his team lost.
Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos hardly moved the meter much, and his team lost.
And Aaron Rodgers of the New York Jets was in for just four plays before he was lost for the season with a torn Achilles tendon, but his team managed to win on the final play.
Go figure.
Yes, it was a wacky week.
