Browns General Manager Andrew Berry said in his end-of-the-season press conference on
Monday that backup quarterback is a top 30 spot on the roster.
He’s both correct and incorrect.
He’s correct in that backup quarterback is indeed a top 30 spot on the roster. But he’s incorrect in that he wasn’t specific enough. It’s not in the top 30 really, as in having a chance to be as low as 29 or 30. It’s in the top two, as in No. 2, behind only starting quarterback.
As we say here all the time, quarterback is the most important position in team sports. A club has no chance without a good quarterback, so if the starter goes down with an injury, then the backup quarterback takes over as No. 1.
That Berry, considering all the injuries the Browns suffered at quarterback this season, with their fortunes being saved after they stumbled upon a gem in Joe Flacco, still doesn’t understand that is mind-boggling to me.
Is he just being stubborn and/or passive aggressive, or what?
