A big apology to Brian Daboll

I was wrong. There, I admitted it.

I owe New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll a big apology.

Yes, that’s the same Brian Daboll who, in just one season, has completely turned around a Giants team that had struggled for years.

I was on Daboll’s case unmercifully when he was offensive coordinator of the Browns in the 2009 and ’10 seasons. I had never heard of him, didn’t know anything about him and didn’t think much of him.

This wasn’t long after the NFL began making coordinators available to the media each week, and one time, he looked right at me and, as politely and as professionally as could ever be done, said he understood that reporters had jobs to do but asked me if I would please give him a chance.

Embarrassed to be called out like that, and that I had been over the top and didn’t act professionally on my end, I smiled and said I would indeed give him a chance.

But the damage had already been done. It was not a good look at all.

The Giants gave him a chance, and they’re thanking their lucky stars that they did.

If only I had done the same way back when without having to be asked to do so.
