What is your lasting memory from the recent NFL Draft?
Mine is one you may not have noticed because it lasted only a couple seconds. However, I think it said a lot about where the Browns are right now, especially perception-wise.
The ESPN production crew mistakenly cut to the Browns draft room during the telecast of Saturday’s third and final day. Team President Jimmy Haslam and General Manager Andrew Barry were standing left to right, respectively, with head coach Kevin Stefanski seated in front of them. They looked so uncomfortable, particularly Haslam and Stefanski, while Berry appeared to be only slightly better.
While the scenes inside the other draft rooms — I hate the term “war room” because it is not that at all; that wasn’t Eisenhower and MacArthur strategizing to help save the world for democracy, but rather guys picking football players — around the league showed people happy and smiling and in a great mood, what was going on inside Browns headquarters in Berea looked like everybody was at a wake, or that those three men don’t really like each other. Something was wrong. It was a terrible look. The tension appeared to be so thick that you could cut it with a stick.
I hope I’m wrong — I very much hope I’m wrong — but I just don’t think that moment bodes well for the Browns going forward.
