Yesterday we discussed five reasons why head coach Hue Jackson will be successful in getting the Browns back on track.
Now we’ll list five reasons why he will fail in that effort:
1. WOODY WAS RIGHT –Iconic former Ohio State football coach Wood Hayes said many times, “You win with people.” He’s right. Coaches are important. They can make players, and teams, better, but to win, a coach must have a good number of good players. The Browns don’t have that now. They are sorely lacking in talent. And there is no guarantee that will change anytime soon.
2. THE FACTS DON’T LIE – The Oakland Raiders are a dysfunctional franchise – very much so – and have been for a long, long time. Jackson was head coach there for one season, finishing with a record of 8-8 in 2011. While most would look at that as an OK mark considering the scatterbrain nature of the organization, there had to be reasons why he was summarily dismissed. Will those reasons – whatever they were – rear their ugly heads again? If they do, then Jackson might be in serious trouble.
3. NOT WHAT IT APPEARS? – Jackson has gotten very good reviews thus far in his short time here. But is that accurate? A source very close to the situation told me that there are more than a few players who think Jackson is “just a lot of talk.” If those players are right, then that could spell doom for Jackson.
4. THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM – On paper at least, the Browns seem to have improved themselves. But they still don’t have a quarterback with a proven track record of success in the NFL recently. That’s going down a slippery slope, one that could cause Jackson to fall flat onto his face, taking the Browns with him.
5. IT’S IN THE WOODWORK, AND YOU CAN’T GET IT OUT – Losing in ingrained in the franchise. That’s what happen when you have 15 losing records in 17 seasons. That’s a hard thing to change. Before Jackson does anything else, he has to try to scrub the negativism out of Browns Headquarters. It may be asking too much.
